Bridging Innovation and Sustainability

Sustainability remains a core focus at DG press. An independent study commissioned by the European sack kraft paper and paper sack industry has confirmed that our non-PE paper pouch project aligns perfectly with the findings.

To assess the recyclability of the Non-PE peppermint pouch and ensure it meets industry standards, it was submitted for testing. The tests were conducted following the harmonised European laboratory test method from CEPI, which evaluates performance within Standard Recycling Mill Processes. For fibre-based packaging, a recyclability score between 0 and 100 is required to be classified “Suitable for Standard Mill Recycling”. The test results for the Non-PE paper pouches show an excellent recyclability score.

With a Yield Score of 95,9 the recyclability of the peppermint pouch is classified as Best in Class, indicating that these pouches are highly unlikely to present any repulpability issues in a standard mill recycling process. The recent independent study commissioned by the European sack kraft paper and paper sack industry further supports these findings, highlighting the strong recyclability performance of fibre-based packaging materials across the sector.

The process

At DG press, we align with these sustainability goals through our innovative paper pouch solution, produced on the DG-AUXO hybrid web offset press. This packaging utilizes specialty kraft paper as its base, ensuring recyclability. To enhance functionality, we apply Siegwerk’s CIRKIT Bar Seal PR 1684 coating twice, providing excellent moisture and grease barrier properties essential for protecting contents.

Our printing process employs electron beam-cured inks, eliminating the need for solvents and hot air dryers, thereby reducing both material and energy consumption. Additionally, a water-based overprint varnish is added to improve heat resistance, facilitating high-speed FFS line operations. All four layers are applied in a single pass on the DG-AUXO press.

Most Importantly, the Non-PE paper pouches are easily de-inkable under Standard Mill Recycling conditions, resulting in a quality paper recyclate.

As a machine builder, we enable sustainable packaging solutions by developing machinery that reduces material usage and enhances recyclability, thereby supporting a circular economy. We are proud to contribute to environmental goals by enabling solutions for fully recyclable paper pouches.
